MJU enjoys a good reputation among London's gastronomes, offering a chic blend of European and Asian styles on a short but perfectly formed tasting menu. A new head chef, Tom Thomsen, has just been appointed and created a new, strikingly French menu. We were delighted at the prospect of a return to MJU, which we undertook purely out of a sense of journalistic duty. We are happy to report the new menu is a delight, as sassy and satisfying as the MJU we have long admired.
MJU sits in the top atrium of this extremely smart hotel. The space itself is soul-less and creates a rather dull first impression. There is a cocktail bar at which diners await their table, and upon being seated we noted the respectful hush among other diners - usually a sign that the food is impressive.
We kicked off with Colchester oysters which arrived on a stacked iron frame, delicate foie gras braised in rhubarb and a selection of tuna sashimi. A selection of amuse bouches arrived throughout the meal to help us keep our palettes fresh. The best main courses were definitely the aged Welsh beef roasted with turnips and veal tongue, and a delicious plate of black cod and scallops in miso.
The fusion menu is more creative than at over-priced and over-rated Sketch, and the service here is far better. The atmosphere is a little lacking but the food and the attentive friendly staff make this a great bet for a meal out - if your companion really loves their food. MJU is expensive, but worth every penny.
