Portuguese cuisine is a rarity in London, aside from the guilty pleasures of popular chain Nandos. Certainly there is nothing in the city that can compare to Portal, where simple and distinctively Portuguese peasant and fishermen's fare is cooked with enviable flair. Service is cheerful and the food is as comforting and earthy as a Portuguese menu should be, soaked in olive oil and full of shimmering fresh fish. Though it is beautifully presented, the chefs at Portal have resisted the temptation to interfere with the basics, such as the salty intensity of Bacalhau, the sticky delights of custard tarts, the oily crunch of a hot sardine sandwich. A unique restaurant and one that has succeeded in modernising Mediterranean cuisine without sacrificing any of the qualities that make it worthwhile.Portal images
