TV Chef Gary Rhodes, he of the spiky hair and fierce pride in British cooking, has teamed up with this top-of-the-line hotel to showcase his cuisine in a plush, enjoyable setting. The magnificent faux art gallery lobby of the hotel leads into a stylish but comfortable cocktail dining room, and seating on leather banquettes or at raised tables gives an atmosphere of rarefied enjoyment. Prices though are far from exorbitant and we strongly recommend a visit here... we had a great time, and the food was a triumph.
After kicking off with a couple of superb cocktails, we were ushered to our table by smiling staff. Service throughout the meal was excellent, and they didn't even raise their eyebrows at my greedy order for a sharing platter to start... for me. This pot of smoked and fresh salmon pate was a messy, flavourful delight, which disappeared almost entirely. I was digging my knife into the corners of the pot. Meanwhile our other starter of foie gras was less striking but perfectly done and obviously of the finest quality.
Proceeding to the main course, my special lady friend went for the house steak, which was first rate, and rare as ordered, while I tried to offset my earlier gluttony by 'only' having a grilled halibut with sides of chips and spinach. Fish is rumoured to be a speciality of Mr Rhodes and I was looking forward to this course a great deal - it didn't disappoint. Halibut has a wonderful flavour which was well served by a simple and subtle preparation... I wanted more.
We finished with a chocolate pot, and a gargantuan cappuccino. One epic British meal later, my companion rolled me towards the door, waved away by cheery staff. The setting is so refined that I almost expected the meal to be too small or subtle for my appetite, but this place serves substantial, memorable meals, and ranks among the happiest dining experiences of the year. |
