TV chef Gary Rhodes, he of the spiky hair and fierce pride in British cooking, has teamed up with this top-of-the-line hotel to showcase his cuisine in a plush, enjoyable setting. The magnificent faux art gallery lobby of the Cumberland Hotel leads into a stylish but comfortable cocktail dining room, and seating on leather banquettes or at raised tables gives an atmosphere of rarefied enjoyment. Prices though are far from exorbitant and we strongly recommend a visit here... the food is a triumph. Kick off with a couple of superb cocktails and you'll be ushered to your table by smiling staff, a sign of the excellent service you can expect here. Start with a pot of smoked and fresh salmon pate: a messy, flavourful delight; or opt for foie gras perfectly done and of the finest quality. Proceeding to the main course, you could try the house steak, first rate and rare as you like it, or a grilled halibut with sides of chips and spinach. Fish is a speciality of Mr Rhodes and not surprisingly the halibut has a wonderful flavour well served by a simple and subtle preparation. A chocolate pot is surely the most simple and delightful way to finish, with a cappuccino if you want to linger and enjoy the refined setting. If you want a memorable meal, Rhodes W1 must rank among the best restaurants in London.
