Rodizio Rico now operate two of these South American-style 'churrascarias', in Notting Hill and Upper Street. They are ambassadors for this hugely enjoyable cuisine to both of the trendiest places in London! We went along to see how the North London outpost was doing a few weeks after opening.
A decent Wednesday crowd was already assembled as we were ushered to our seats by the manager, a friendly, funny and courteous sort who made us feel most welcome and explained the drill. A 'churrascaria' is a Brazilian free-for-all barbecue. Applied to the London restaurant scene, this means that you pay a set price (£18) for all you can eat from the salad bar. Grilled meats are then brought to your table by the chefs and you can eat as much of them as you can possibly fit in. Rodizio in Upper Street is just the l'il bit better than Notting Hill because they also offer a seafood plate for an extra fiver - go for it.
My dining companion for the evening was a jet set lad who's seen and done it all in terms of restaurants, but we both agreed that this was one of the best meals we could remember. The marriage of two Homer Simpson-size appetites to a delicious all-you-can-eat format was a blessed one.
The salads were excellent, and smiling chefs brought us meat and seafood until we were fit to burst. Bacon-wrapped chicken, rare beef, grilled cured lamb, garlic prawns, whole roasted sardines... it was delightful. A chicken heart each at the end of the meal sealed it... we were gross! And happy. They also do a mean caipirinha.
LondonTown.com heartily endorses this excellent concept restaurant, and we advise anyone who likes meat to check it out. Much better than any similar buffet experience, and the slashing of the chef's cleaver at your table adds an exciting touch as well. Not only is this great fun, it's good value and the food is meticulously prepared. I wouldn't advise visiting with a date unless they are used to seeing you pig out - it's irresistible.
Some of the best dining fun in London and a must for all serious carnivores.
