Roka is a truly outstanding Japanese restaurant a few minutes walk from Tottenham Court Road. The food is exceptional, service discreet and friendly, and in the upstairs section you can watch the chefs at work - at the robata grill in the centre of the room and the sushi masters behind a steel canteen. This Charlotte Street restaurant, co-founded by Rainer Becker and Arjun Waney in 2004, is the original Roka and its success led to Roka restaurants in Canary Wharf, Mayfair and Aldwych. If you want to sample one of the restaurants most celebrated signature dishes ask for the lamb cutlets with Korean spices. Alternatively, head downstairs to the Shochu Lounge, Roka's dimly lit, stylish basement bar. More seductive than the glass and metal restaurant upstairs, Shochu Lounge serves the same world class Japanese menu and boasts low couches for diners and plenty of pillows to prop yourself up on if you eat too much. An expensive but unforgettably good place, far more adventurous than Nobu and other high-end Japanese restaurants.
