When Rowena Romulo opened her Kensington restaurant in March 2016, Filipino cuisine was very much Asia's best kept culinary secret. Since then, Romulo has successfully introduced such Philippine dishes as kare-kare, sisig and chicken adobo to a growing band of devotees, emerging as the capital's 'go to' restaurant for fine Filipino food. The brand was founded in Manila in 2009 by Rowena's sister and brother-in-law as a tribute to their grandfather - the first Filipino to win a Pulitzer Prize. The 60-seater Romulo Cafe & Restaurant in London is housed in a former Georgian townhouse where it serves heirloom Romulo family recipes and reimagined versions of Filipino dishes in an ambience evoking a comfortable Filipino family home. Chef Jeremy Villanueva, whose CV includes Le Gavroche under Michel Roux Jr, Brasserie Roux and Le Boudin Blanc Rib, cooks a standout dish of braised grass-fed beef sliders served on homemade traditional Filipino bread.
