The last thing we need is another ultra chic restaurant where the atmosphere is decidedly hushed. That's why Rosemary Lane has added such a breath of fresh air to the capital's fine dining scene. You'll have to brave a particularly shady corner of East London to get there and you may wonder if this really is the place on first sighting but you won't be disappointed. As a converted pub near the infamous Cable Street, the restaurant still has vestiges of that era left over - add some tables and chairs and it could even pass as an old-fashioned railway restaurant (think dark wood panelling). It has been suggested that a revamp is in order but to say that is to totally miss the unpretentious charm of the place. Of course, the real reason for going is the delicious nosh, cooked up by American chef Cristina Anghelescu. It's French in origin with a pinch of California to mix it up and the results are exquisite. From beautiful seafood to hearty meat dishes, and ending in melt-in-the-mouth desserts, the menu changes with the seasons to ensure the freshest ingredients make it to the table. This truly is a hidden gem - let's not tell the media luvvies about it or they'll turn it into the latest "edgy" place to go.Rosemary Lane images
