When taking an Argentinean out for a meal it's easy to know what they'll like - the South American nation are the world's most prolific beef-eaters - but near impossible to meet their lofty standards. Cue the Battersea branch of Santa Maria del Buen Ayre. The original restaurant in Hackney has been doing a roaring trade off Broadway Market for some years now, relying on an unadorned, food-centred atmosphere and lip-smackingly tasty beef, shipped in fresh from the River Plate. Although this new venture, catering to a wider crowd, has some other options on the menu, stick to one of the many unusual (or at least unusually named) steaks, which are violently barbecue-seared on the outside but cut open to reveal a deliciously blood-red centre. Don't expect a spectacular garnish; the best you can hope for are some chunky chips, a chunk of tomato and a dollop of delicious chimichurri (parsley, oregano, garlic, paprika and olive oil). But, remember, it's ALL about the steak. Wash down with a fruity glass of Medozan red. Santa Maria del Sur images
