Cross the threshold of Shanghai Blues and plunge into its dimly lit innards where nattily dressed Oriental waitresses guide you through the solid lines of its dark, distinctive interior. Touches like the weighty blue stools and the elliptical tumblers demonstrate the lavish attention to detail, while a hypnotic trip into the dimly lit, mirrored toilets in the cellar is unforgettable.
Tastebud priming entrées including crunchy chick peas, pickled cucumbers and classic prawn crackers lead the way for the diverse and reputation-deserving Dim Sum. The dumplings, for example, range from the unremarkable vegetable to the quite exquisite steamed scallop variety. Main courses are no disappointment either. Dishes made from an assortment of meats, fish and seafood provide a fine balance and variety of flavours. The lightly flavoured, steamed sea bass was a notable favourite as was the accompanying Morning Glory, brittle to the bite, helping to clear the palate. Finish off with the refreshing green tea ice-cream.
It’s hardly surprising that Dim Sum has been a success across London. This Oriental twist on tapas (order a selection, every one dips in) appeals to everyone, especially at lunchtime, but Shanghai Blues carries on into the evening, supplying a great dining experience with efficient, unobtrusive service. Be warned though – don’t pig out too much on the Dim Sum and have no room for the rest.
