SoChina is a giant of a restaurant, stunningly redecorated over three floors, with gentle lighting and a great curving bar successfully creating an atmosphere of jolly intimacy. The stylishly modern carved screens, and gorgeous traditional dragons, give a very plausible impression of a genuine Beijing eatery. It is raised further above the pack by quick service and an imaginative take on the traditional Chinatown menu. Old favourites like Peking fried duck are cooked with both care and flair, while more authentic fare such as baked soft-shell crab was sensationally tasty (although to be avoided by anyone on a low-salt diet).
With rock-bottom prices and a massive range of dishes on offer, this is the sort of restaurant that gave Chinatown its reputation as the best place for affordable food in Central London. Long may it continue to do so.
