The Rex Whistler Restaurant at Tate Britain gets its name from the specially commissioned Rex Whistler mural, 'The Expedition in Pursuit of Rare Meats', which provides more than something pretty to look at while you're eating - it extends the cultural experience from the gallery to the restaurant. Richard Oxley's menu of contemporary British cuisine is also worth making a reservation for - simple dishes like pan fried Cornish pollock with girolles and langoustines, and roasted red-leg partridge with bread sauce are cooked with skill and confidence. The menu is well matched by Hamish Anderson's extensive and affordable wine list which has earned a clutch of awards as well as a loyal clientele. Take one of the tables outside on a sunny day and you wouldn't want to be anywhere else. There are special deals to be had like the low-priced set lunch or the Late at Tate Britain programme, when the restaurant stays open for supper (on the first Friday of the month) and offers a special seasonal five-course tasting menu matched with five specially selected wines.
