Formally the famous Wig and Pen Club, this branch of Thai Square occupies a building that's supposedly the only one on the Strand to have survived the great Fire of London in 1666. Since the early 1900s this historical gem situated on the Strand served as a drinking den popular among journalists of nearby Fleet Street and lawyers - who didn't have far to stumble from the Royal Courts of Justice opposite. Now only the leaded stained-glass window bearing the date in 1625 serves as a reminder of its long history. Back then, number 230 was the home of the Gatekeeper of Temple Bar who used to offer 'pennorth (penny worth) of meat and bread' to the crowds who used to gather at the Temple Gate where beheaded traitors were displayed. This explains the reputed sightings of Cromwell's ghost who supposedly visits the bar searching for his head. Today, you'll find pad thai in place of your 'pennorth of meat', and prawn cracker instead of bread. Prices may have gone up a little too in the intervening years but they remain very reasonable all the same.
