Being the only Chinese-style bar and eaterie on Shoreditch High Street, The Drunken Monkey is certainly a breath of fresh air. Large, dark and spacious, with hanging red lanterns straight out of a Tintin comic, this cocktail bar certainly know how to cater for all. With a well stocked bar offering some fantastically-named cocktails (around £7 a pop) and a wide-range of beers and wines, it suits those looking for a cool watering hole with a mixed crowd and some decent house music. But throw in the excellent - and cheap - food menu and it ticks yet another box. Delicious dim sum, generously-sized duck pancakes, steamed and fried food (prawns, chicken, tofu, beef, pork?), dumplings galore, a range of noodle, vegetarian and rice dishes - The Drunken Monkey has it all. If you're eating, make sure you reserve a table most nights - and be prepared for the hit-and-miss service and slightly cramped loos. Still, it beats some of the other jam-packed, run-of-the-mill establishments in the area - and it won't burn a hole in your wallet. No monkey business here, just tasty food and great cocktails.
On the second Wednesday of every month girls can ditch coke and popcorn for cocktails and dim sum at The Drunken Monkey's Chick Flick Movie Night (8pm, £12 for film and food). For more details see www.drunkenmonkey.co.uk.
