The second gastropub from the Gordon Ramsay group might not look like much from the outside but the wood paneling, high ceilings, large windows and original fireplaces make a handsome - and very cosily pubbish - interior. Vintage black and white pictures of the area complete the restoration of the Victorian building. The menu is enticing, with weighty plates of simple seasonal food, and a whole 'on toast' selection, featuring perfect bar snacks like devilled chicken livers and poached eggs with anchovies. This is proper pub grub, and there are few concessions to the health-concious: vegetables come swimming in butter, portions are vast, and potatoes feature heavily, whether as mash, chips or roasties. Only the hopeless service marred our visit to what has to be one of the best value gastropubs in the Capital.
