The Fentiman Arms is a special pub in Lambeth a cricket ball's throw way from The Oval. They have a lovely wild garden out the back, which actually provides the vegetables for the kitchen. As you might expect, this means an ever-changing and very limited menu, but the food is simply superb. It tastes more like home cooking than traditional high-class restaurant food, and every recipe is a delight, from traditional roasts to Satay skewers. The staff are incredibly friendly and clearly a bit mad, and when they're not run off their feet they come over and talk to you, going as far as to share the secrets of the kitchen. This place really makes you feel welcome, and is one of the best spots in south London for a pub lunch and a brilliant place for summer drinking. For a much more enjoyable meal, go when they aren't too busy, on a summer work day after the lunch shift. And if you're visiting the Brit Oval for the ICC World Twenty20 why not pop down to the Fentiman Arms for a pre- or post-match pint, or stock up with some rations from the garden? If you're lucky, the Fentiman XI may bowl you over with one of their revered BBQs...Notes: Garden tables and outdoor terrace. Lunch served until 2.45pm.
