The Prince Arthur is the most pub-like of all the Tom and Ed Martin gastropubs, with a bustling bar dominating the small dining room, and a regular flow of locals popping in for a drink. The food leaves one in no doubt, however, that this is primarily a restaurant. Main courses are big, muscular platefuls based on simple British cooking and good ingedients - cottage pie, fish and chips, roast pork and a fantastic roast rabbit were all on the short seasonal menu on our visit. Starters are more elaborate affairs - a beef carpaccio was a startling combination of robust falvours, with horseradish and fresh peppercorns stacked high on the raw meat. The signature pudding is a deep fried jam sandwich with ice cream (much nicer than it sounds), but there are also tarts, crumbles and British cheeses for less adventurous palates.
