Austrian-themed family restaurant with in-house traditional entertainment and costumed staff.
Yodelling, accordion playing, glockenspiel banging and a toe-tapping show involving traditional Tirolean cow bells are the side orders available at this fantastically camp eatery. As you leave the chic streets of Westbourne Grove and arrive in this bizarre, but wholly welcoming, wonderland where all of the staff wear Tirolean costume and the friendly proprietor yodels his way through dinner, it’s hard not to burst into song yourself. There’s something totally refreshing about having a family-run Austrian theme restaurant, that’s been around for forty-odd years, thriving in the heart of trendy Westbourne Grove. Nothing could be further from cool, and hurrah! for that. Inside it’s pure Alpine ski lodge – all red gingham, wooden benches, sauerkraut and sachertorte. The food in this place is kind of a sideline to the entertainment but is still worth tucking into heartily, especially the huge list of savoury and sweet fondues which are perfect for sharing. As the evening progresses, however, you’ll find yourself eating less and singing (and drinking) more. Schnapps is great for lubricating the lungs and as the lederhosen-level gets higher, with flailing legs almost reaching the ceiling, you’ll find more than the odd glass slipping down a little too easily. Cheers! Or “Zum Wohl!” as they say in the Alps.
Best for:
Cow bells and lederhosen, singing and sauerkraut, sachertorte and schnapps.
