Back in 1989 when Wodka first opened it was ahead of the influx of Polish immigrants who, by all accounts, have started heading home again. It may sound like a vodka bar - and there are a good selection of vodkas and vodka-based cocktails - but when Jan Woroniecki first set up shop he had the aim of getting the locals to appreciate the drink, and not just for shots. His idea was to put the emphasis on the Polish and Eastern European food so you would accompany your Polskie Martini with excellent caviar and herring blinis or cheese filled pierogi dumplings. This place proves that vodka can also be enjoyed as dessert - with a marinated berry compote. Wines are also available and go well with mains of Golonka pork shank with sauerkraut as well as more 'European' dishes of crab and cod fishcakes and venison meatballs. Housed in a former dairy to Kensington Palace, within a pretty residential street, this elegant restaurant - sister to Baltic in Southwark and Chez Kristof in Hammersmith - has successfully challenged UK perceptions of Eastern European flavours.
