Aldo Zilli made his reputation with cookbooks that took the mystique out of Mediterranean fish cooking: simple, hearty dishes that anyone could prepare. His flagship Soho restaurant, Zilli Fish, is a considerably more elaborate affair, with imaginative South-East Asian-influenced seafood concoctions and a lengthy menu. It's a clean, minimalist modern room, with a huge fishtank covering one wall - very chic, but a bit of a noise trap, so perhaps not ideal for a date. The simplest dishes are the most impressive, with an irresistibly flavoursome lobster spaghetti the highlight of any meal. Carpaccios of salmon and tuna, and a scallop resting in a cauliflower puree are just as impressive. A couple of the showier dishes are less exciting - a pistachio crust is a delicious addition to a main course, but may result in a struggle to tell what kind of fish is lurking underneath it. Minor gripes aside, though, this a fine modern restaurant, with an unexpectedly flashy style.Zilli Fish images
