Mayfair's oldest butcher first opened its doors in 1830, that's over 170 years of supplying meat to Mayfair residents and businesses. Butchers Justin Preston and David House rescued the business in 2006 and now not only own this retail outlet but also Rare Butchers of Distinction, suppliers to smart London eateries such as the Wolseley and Cecconi's. Billed by Delia Smith as "one of the best places to buy game in the British Isles", Allens will only supply meat if it's in season and you can be sure of getting some top quality cuts. There's a wonderful variety of game from duck, pheasant or grouse to snipe and woodcock as well as less strong flavoured meats - notably some excellent marbled Scotch beef and exceptionally lean pork. It all comes with traditional bespoke service and original Victorian décor; warm, muted tiled walls, wooden floors and a central, chopping block where all the action takes place in full view of customers, providing a suitably theatrical setting. Despite the upmarket location, prices are not as 'Mayfair' as you might expect.
