Visitor Information
Established in 1776, Christie's holds sales ranging from Old Masters to the contemporary arts. In 1990 it broke all records with the sale Van Gogh's Portrait of Doctor Gachet for $82,500,000. More recently it raised $13,378,558 for the Rothschild Prayerbook, an extremely rare bible with illuminated manuscripts. The Christie's in South Kensington is their busiest saleroom in the UK. There are additional London branches on King Street, St James's which also has a gallery and a bookshop on the premises, and a Christie's gallery in Mayfair which is open to the public without charge and offers up to four exhibitions each year.
