Max Wigram, James Bond fan, art dealer and husband of fashion designer Phoebe Philo Before is a colourful character. He's worked at the Royal Academy where he co-curated 'Apocalypse' - the less successful sequel to the landmark 1997 'Sensation' exhibition. Working with Norman Rosenthal, the RA's exhibitions secretary, they orchastrated 'The Galleries Show' where 20 of London's commercial galleries set up shop inside the RA. In 2003 Wigram set up MWProjects, now this gallery, which represents 16 artists in sculpture, painting, film, photography and installation and hosts around 10 shows a year. The gallery's location on one of London's most exclusive shopping streets indicates the kind of buyer these artists attract. The kind who think nothing of spending £6,000 on a handbag. That's not to say that the art exhibited is frivolous, far from it. Artists they represent have been shown at institutions as prestigious as the Guggenheim, the Pompidou Centre and at the Venice Bienale.
