The last surviving section of John Nash's Royal Opera House (which burnt down in 1867), this stunning arcade was the first covered shopping street in Britain. In the nineteenth century the shops sold music scores, opera glasses and mens clothes during the day, and were used as high-class brothels by night, serving the gentlemen's clubs of Pall Mall and the revelers in the West End. It has become rather more respectable since then, with art galleries and luxury gift shops occupying the neat spaces either side of the colonnade.
