A much welcome addition to Fulham Broadway is Union Market, a combined farmers' market, deli, grocers, bakery, wine shop and cafe which has taken over the Grade II-listed building that used to house TGI Friday's, and was the original ticket hall of the tube station. It's a definite improvement from the previous tenants, replacing yet another nondescript restaurant chain with an umbrella of foodie enterprises which brings out the best of the stunning airy location. Union Market's proposition is about traceable, natural, regional, high quality, best practice British food - and its backbone lies on three powerful brand partners in wine, bread and cheese: Rothschild wine, Bread Factory and Neal's Yard Dairy. It isn't cheap, but it's nowhere as exorbitant as Whole Foods and while the quality is far better than the ramshackle Fulham Broadway Sainsbury's it also offers a nice alternative to the huge nearby Waitrose - especially if you feel like combining your search for select produce with a coffee in nice surroundings. It's the kind of place where locals can browse on the weekends and pick up some high-end delights without trekking all the way over to Borough Market. Of course, the stalls on the North End Road offer better value for money, but Union Market serves its target audience well. Plus, there's a relaxed eat-in restaurant (complete with a brand new seasonal menu that champions quality British-grown ingredients) open all day, and a deli where you can get take-out sandwiches, salads, quiches - you name it.
