The fashion empire founded by Gabrielle 'Coco' Chanel began in 1912 as a millinery shop in Paris. Now the iconic fashion label is sported by well heeled ladies who can carry off the demure signature suit, best worn with pearls. More recently Karl Lagerfeld has been chief designer of the French fashion house, taking the reins in 1983. For those who can afford the fashion, the eternally popular Chanel No. 5 perfume offers a more accessible alternative - the distinctive scent as instantly recognisable as the double 'C' Chanel logo.
