Elms Lesters Painting Rooms are housed in an extraordinary space, purpose built as a painting studio in 1904. Since 1984 the gallery has been specialising in contemporary artists who began their careers working on the street. The building still serves its original purpose as there's not only an exhibition space here but artists rooms and facilities for artists to work in residence. These affiliated artists often produce site specific work which is displayed in the gallery. Close to theatre land, the scenic painting studios have been used to create masterpieces for theatre backdrops for more than a hundred years.
