Ham is a picturesque area of Richmond named after the old English word for 'a place in the bend in the river' as opposed to any porkish pretensions. Most famous for Ham House, a lavish stately home which boasts a statue by (funnily enough) John Bacon the younger in its grounds, Ham and neighbouring Petersham provide a perfect itinerary for a day trip out of central London.
