Before the Bermondsey Artists' Group (BAG) took over the cafe in the middle of Southwark Park it had fallen into disrepair. The building was completely renovated and reopened in 1984 to become a thriving artist-led venue for contemporary art. This enabled people who had little contact with modern art to see work by Richard Wilson, Patrick Caulfield, Eduardo Paolozzi and Derek Jarman. International links followed and in 1990 a regular exchange programme was established with artists from East Berlin. In 1997 a new purpose-built gallery was constructed, improving the exhibition space and facilities. The Cafe Gallery Projects also set up and run Dilston Grove on the Southwest corner of Southwark Park in a Grade II listed former church.
