One of the oldest and most famous Christian structures in England, and also one of the most spectacular, Canterbury Cathedral has a history dating back to AD 597 when it was founded by its first archbishop, Augustine - a Papal delegate from Rome.
While many of the oldest features have disappeared over time the cathedral still boasts a vast number of ancient and historically architectural gems and features - the oldest being the great Romanesque crypt built around 1100 and still in evidence today.
Step back in time as you make your way from the spacious precincts that envelope the cathedral into the echoing remains of the former monastery. The cloisters, chapter house, and Norman water tower all miraculously survived Henry VIII’s ruthless dissolution in 1536.
Follow in the footsteps of swarms of pilgrims as you make your way along the 14th-15th century nave, in the Trinity Chapel, to the High Altar and the shrine of Thomas Becket. On a dark evening on the 29th December 1170 in the north-west transept, Archbishop Becket was murdered by four knights aiming to ingratiate themselves with King Henry II by removing the Archbishop who was promoting the rights of the church against the wishes of the king. As reports of miracles performed by Becket spread so the numbers of pilgrims to the shrine increased making the site of Becket’s martyrdom one of the most famous places of pilgrimage in Europe.
A 12th century Gothic quire, some magnificent stained glass windows depicting the miracles of St Thomas Becket, a host of medieval tombs, including that of King Henry IV and Edward the Black Prince, complete the picture to this jewel in the crown of Kent.
Access is restricted on certain dates due to special events and services.
