The Gagosian is a cavernous space for exhibitions of the highest calibre. It is a major asset for the regeneration of the King's Cross area. Larry Gagosian, nicknamed Go-Go for his go-getting business approach, is an influential figure on the art scene and his decisions should not be underestimated. He may have started out selling posters near the UCLA campus in Los Angeles for $15 a pop but he soon graduated to selling works of art to blue-chip companies. That, simply put, is a lesson for us all in how to make a name – and a fortune – for yourself in the art world. The Gagosian has shown important contemporary artists at its locations in the UK, US and Italy. This is one of two venues in London with a smaller space at Davies Street, Mayfair. Notable artists represented by the Gagosian include Andy Warhol, Frank Stella, Rachel Whiteread, Jake and Dinos Chapman, John Currin and Jeff Koons. The popularity the Gagosian name attracts is demonstrated by a Damien Hirst show held in 2000 (in their Chelsea gallery in New York) which was attended by an impressive 100,000 visitors.
