A year in the construction, this £3.6 million attraction opened in a blaze of farcical incompetence, as the architects discovered two shocking things: kids play in fountains and wet granite is dangerously slippery. With teething problems overcome, the Princess Diana Memorial Fountain can be appreciated as a stunning creation, and a suitable tribute to The People's Princess. A great ring of Cornish granite, through which the water swirls and twists in both directions, surrounds a complex, contoured water feature. In marked contrast to many public monuments, this is unobtrusively beautiful and in perfect harmony with its surroundings. Staff are on hand throughout the summer to ensure that children messing about in the water do not injure themselves.
