The Riflemaker Gallery gets its name from its location, housed as it is in a former gunmaker's workshop. It's a barely disguised conversion and it's easy to imagine the firearms being constructed as you feel your way down the dimly lit staircase. The gallery is housed in the oldest public building in the West End, dating back to 1712, a time when shooting and blood sports were popular pastimes for the landed gentry. In its latest incarnation, the historic building now showcases work by upcoming artists and is very much a home-from-home for London's creative people. The gallery, under directors Virginia Damtsa and Tot Taylor, hosted an acclaimed William Burroughs exhibition in 2005 which proved very popular and drew a crowd of 30,000. Talks, film programmes and Monday night events accompany all of their shows which usually run for eight weeks with two different shows run consecutively on separate floors.Riflemaker Gallery events
