Opened on 24th April 2008, the Embankment Galleries at Somerset House offer 750 square metres of exhibition space where the Hermitage Rooms used to be. Exhibitions differ somewhat to the previous jewels displayed, focusing instead on photography, design, fashion and architecture - topics that appeal to a broader and younger audience. The opening exhibition, 'Skin + Bones', gave a good indication of the new direction the gallery has taken, focussing on the cross-over between fashion and architecture since the 1980s. The gallery is located under the vaulted arches on the riverside of Somerset House at street level but leave time to walk through the courtyard above for the full Somerset House experience.
