St Augustine's Tower, a Grade I listed building within the churchyard gardens at St John-at-Hackney Church, is the oldest building in Hackney. Dated to the end of the 13th century, the tower includes a working clock, estimated to be from the late 16th or early 17th century. The old tower has a symbolic and ceremonial role in the borough: it's been pictured on the masthead of the Hackney Gazette since its foundation in 1864 and is incorporated in the coat of arms of the London Borough of Hackney. The tower stands within a four and a quarter acre site - the churchyard gardens providing a green oasis in the heart of Hackney.St Augustine's Tower images
