The V & A's Theatre and Performance galleries open in March 2009 replacing those at the Theatre Museum in Covent Garden, closed since 2007. The galleries hold the UK's national collection of material about live performance since Shakespeare's day. All aspects of theatre are covered including drama, dance, musical theatre, circus, music hall, rock and pop. Items on display include works of art, costumes, ephemera, video recordings, puppets, posters and photographs. Among more than 250 objects in the collection are a 1623 first folio of Shakespeare's plays, the tutu worn by Margot Fonteyn in Swan Lake, and the original artwork of the Rolling Stones lips logo. Through these works the process of performance is examined, from the initial conception, the design and development stages, through to audiences' reactions.
