Completely transformed in the 1980s, Liverpool Street Station's bright, modern appearance belies its Victorian birth. True, some original features remain and some fondly remember the old awkward layout and network of Dickensian walkways, but the eighties refit was pretty comprehensive. Its location between the City of London and the East End means that many of its 123 million visitors a year come to do business. Others, heading in the opposite direction, are on their way to East Anglia or even further - by hopping on the Stansted Express. Heading out of the station, up the escalators and exiting onto Liverpool Street, turn right and you'll come across the historic Great Eastern Hotel - now Andaz Liverpool Street - which, when it opened in May 1884, was for some time the only hotel in the City of London.
Regular trains depart Liverpool Street for destinations in Essex and East Anglia. The Stansted Express leaves every 15 minutes from for Stansted Airport and takes about 45 minutes. Off peak, the Express runs twice an hour.
