Millbank Pier, located near to Tate Britain, was opened on 22 May 2003 by then mayor Ken Livingstone, creating a 'Tate to Tate' link by boat as well as a stop-off for river cruises and boats navigating the Thames. Marks Barfield Architects - designers of the London Eye - created a 'functional floating sculpture', earning them Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Award in 2004 for the pier's high architectural standard, contribution to its local environment and design excellence.
