The makeshift jetty on the south bank of the Thames, the Richmond Landing Stage, is the drop-off point for Hammerton's Ferry, a passenger boat that's been running between Ham House and Marble Hill Park with its Marble Hill House nearby since 1909. The ferry service is named after famous Twickenham watermen Walter Hammerton who first started taking passengers across the water in his skiff, the Pax, twelve at a time - much to the displeasure of the Dysart family, owners of the nearby Twickenham Ferry, who sued. Walter won the long legal battle in 1915 and his skiff can still be seen in the Museum of London Docklands today.
