On the ground floor of the stylish Charlotte Street Hotel Oscar Bar and Restaurant is a bold, bright bistro where modern British classics like grilled Dover sole and roast chicken are served. Oscar, named after the films screened at the hotel's adjacent private cinema, is decorated with huge murals depicting contemporary life painted in the Bloomsbury style. The bar gets busy and buzzing in the evenings, but never uncomfortably so. It's a popular place with the local media crowd who come for after-work cocktails like the Oscar Limeade - Grey Goose vodka and apricot brandy muddled with fresh lime. This makes it an excellent place for poeple watching but the restaurant is also great for business breakfasts - with choices of Scotch pancakes, French toast, skinny omlette and kedgeree - 'ladies who lunch', and client entertaining thanks to the lively atmosphere, superior service and decent food. Afternoon tea is also good with pretty tea pots, a selection of traditional cakes, fruit and plain scones, and sandwiches. Add some sparkle with a glass of Pommery, or opt for the Bloomsbury Tea and you get a chocolate eclair, lemon and vanilla Charlotte, strawberry tart, and coconut cake.
