Named after the 19th century English architect Sir James Pennethorne, the man who designed the Somerset House New Wing in which its based, Pennethorne's Cafe Bar offers all day dining, freshly baked breads and a menu inspired by Pennthorne's Grand Tour travels to France and Italy. The 85-cover cafe bar offers speciality breads - banana bread, orange brioche, walnut and raisin - all baked on site. Lunch is a delicious array of salads and sweets from the chef's deli table, roast beef, blue cheese, grilled red onions, maple syrup on rye, smoked Cornish mackerel and pickled white cabbage. Dinner brings small plates of beef, celeriac, crispy shallots; pickled Cornish mackerel, white cabbage and caraway seeds; and watercress, soft egg and pancetta - all served on toast. Desserts are traditionally comforting choices of French apple tart, Cambridge burnt cream, baked Pecorino with honey caramel and milk tart, and coffee cream. All in one of London's most iconic settings.
