Chef Lee Westcott takes on his first solo venture with the Typing Room, the 40-cover restaurant at the Town Hall Hotel on the former site of Nuno Mendes' Viajante. The chef has refined his trade working with top chefs Jason Atherton, and Tom Aikens, at Per Se and under Gordon Ramsay. Now flying solo, Lee offers a simplified menu offers five snacks, five starters and five mains including dishes like mackerel, passion fruit, burnt cucumber & dill; pigeon smoked in pine, salt baked celeriac, lovage & hazelnut; and green tea, yoghurt and sesame. Six-course and eight-course tastings menus are available if you want to sample the full experience, accompanied by wines from smaller producers and English vineyards. In terms of decor, natural materials including oak, marble and ceramic are combined with touches of brushed brass to provide warmth. The open kitchen has been designed as a focal point, and the artwork nods to the restaurant's East London setting and hotel history - the Typing Room was where the mayor's letters used to be written up. As well as being responsible for the main restaurant Lee oversees the menu in Corner Room brasserie and the Peg + Patriot bar run by Matt Whiley, co-founder of the Fluid Movement, and London bars Purl, Whistling Shop and Dach & Sons.
