Palmers Restaurant is a family run gourmet restaurant creating great modern British grub in an unlikely location. Run by talented Czech father and sons, Palmers is situated on a scruffy part of Roman Road in Bethnal Green. It instantly stands out from the crowd here, mainly because it doesn't sell chicken and burgers, and also because of its striking appearance. Bright white walls, huge glass windows and clinical decor leave the interior a little sterile with large photos of deli foods brightening things up a bit. The menu veers dangerously close to pretension with flashy dishes like foie gras parfait and pig's cheek rillette, but it is all justified by their hearty portions, punchy flavours and fair prices. The food is thoughtfully sourced with most of the produce coming in from Billingsgate and Spitalfields market. Palmers aren't afraid to use all cuts of meat and that really pays off. Dishes like the Suffolk roast pork belly and pig's faggot with butternut squash puree and wild garlic are a big hit with their growing fanbase. It appears to be an ambitious gamble opening a gourmet restaurant in a downtrodden part of town, but this gamble has certainly paid off. A real treat for the local foodies.
