On the ground floor of the East Wing of the National Gallery, with its own entrance opposite St Martin-in-the-Fields, The National Cafe is a modern all-day restaurant offering fresh food in fine surroundings. With tall ceilings and long windows that let the light flood in, the dining room is done up in pink accents and pale wood. Under the direction of Oliver Peyton's restaurant company, Peyton and Byrne, the focus is on quality British ingredients so you can be sure your fish is well sourced. They offer everything from brunch to pre-theatre dining and do a decadent afternoon tea. From 7th October 2019 until 26th January 2020, afternoon tea, served daily between 3pm and 5pm, celebrates the work of the impressionist Paul Gauguin whose exotic portraits are on display at the gallery. Smoked salmon and cucumber finger sandwiches and freshly baked scones are followed by colourful patisserie made with pistachio and raspberry to play on Gauguin's bright colour palette. Aromatic wild berry and Gardenia teas are the perfect accompaniment.
