Noel Coward's play, Volcano, was dismissed and discarded by producers back in 1956, but a mere 56 years later it makes its long-awaited stage debut at the Vaudeville Theatre. The producers brave enough to tackle the intense, tropical drama are Bill Kenwright and Thelma Holt, the director is Roy Marsdon and the complex lead roles are played by Jason Durr, Dawn Steele and Jenny Seagrove. The tawdry tale was said to be inspired by Coward's observations of James Bond author Ian Fleming and his philandering ways whilst they holidayed in Jamaica in the 50s. It centres on widowed Adela Shelly, and the tangled visitors to her colonial Caribbean home situated on the side of an active volcano (spot the thinly disguised metaphor). With her husband recently deceased, Adela finds herself under the gaze of a suave and seductive visitor, Guy Littleton. But he is not without his complications, which becomes abundantly apparent when his feisty wife Melissa arrives to reclaim her husband. This interesting unseen work contains curious themes of sexuality and delves deep into human motivations; a must-see for Coward fans.
