If you find yourself having to venture to the dark depths of Croydon (perhaps to go to the huge Ikea) then why not make an event of it with a visit to Albert's Table? Serving modern British food and using quality, seasonal, local produce, this intimate bistro-style restaurant received a very favourable review by The Observer's food critic Jay Rayner, who said Albert's Table was the only reason to go to Croydon to eat. Head chef and co-owner Joby Wells learnt his trade at some of the best Michelin-starred restaurants in London, including The Square, The Orrery, Zafferano's and La Trompette. Mains include local Hereford beef, roast breast of duck, pork loin and belly, herb-crusted cod with crayfish tails, and pan-fried stone bass. There's a decent wine list which is much cheaper than anywhere in central London, while on Sunday lunch and Monday nights there's a bring-your-own offer with just £5 corkage on any wine.
