40 Maltby Street

Under the railway arches on Maltby Street is a food lover's paradise, filled with shops from the likes of St John Bakery, Monmouth Coffee, Kernel Brewery and Tayshaw greengrocers. At No. 40 is Gergovie Wines where they not only sell select bottles of chemical-free wines by small producers from Italy, France and Slovenia but they also serve food on Thursday and Friday nights as well as Saturdays, 10am-5pm, when all the shops on the street are open. It's a casual affair as you'd expect with the trains rattling overhead, above the arched corrugated iron ceiling but the experience is something quite special. Owners Harry Lester (founder and chef of the Anchor and Hope) and Raef Hodgson have a strong understanding of what artisan food production is all about - it's in the blood for Raef who is the son of cheese expert Randolph Hodgson of Neal's Yard Dairy fame and Anita le Roy who heads up the nearby Monmouth Coffee empire. In setting up Gergovie they have tapped into the demand for wines made with little intervention, and low or zero sulphates. By adding the 40 Maltby Street restaurant string to their Gergovie wine bow, they are giving wine lovers a better understanding of how to pair food with their favourite tipple. NOTE: 40 Maltby Street does not take bookings.
