In the basement of Sir Christopher Wren's grandest architectural achievement is burial place of St Paul's Cathedral, where those who have made an outstanding contribution to the life of the nation now rest. Nelson, Wellington and Wren himself lie entombed in the crypt of the cathedral but that's not the only reason to visit. The crypt is also home to a rather good restaurant where you can indulge in some well cooked food or take afternoon tea. The menu changes regularly but a typical winter warmer would be a choice of squash and goats cheese ravioli served with wilted red chard, or venison burger with orange and juniper chutney, and fat cut chips. They also do a special Sunday roast menu with cheesy cauliflower, roast potatoes, carrots, Brussel tops and Yorkshire pudding. Afternoon tea is served with all the accoutrements including silver strainer, milk jug and mismatched crockery, and comes with a generous amount of sandwiches - cucumber and cream cheese included - homemade scones with clotted cream and delicious cakes. A truly traditional experience and all the better for being in the belly of one of London's most well known landmarks.
