SE14 is mainly comprised of the New Cross area, known for its music culture and for being home to one of the most prestigious schools in the city. Goldsmiths, University of London can be found in New Cross, which is believed to have taken its name from a coaching house originally known as the 'Golden Cross' which stood close to the current Goldsmiths Tavern. The area is renowned for its musical links: during the 90s, New Cross club, The Venue, was central to the indie rock and Brit Pop scenes, playing host to gigs by the esteemed likes of Oasis, Radiohead, Pulp and Ocean Colour Scene. New Cross has been regarded as the birth place of recent musical craze 'New Rave' and is fast gaining ground with London's fashion and music journalists, some even coming to herald it as South London's answer to Shoreditch in the wake of its commercialisation. Actor Gary Oldman was born and raised in New Cross and his film Nil By Mouth is based on his life growing up in south east London and was largely filmed in the area. More
