    Hotels in Wandsworth

Named after the River Wandle, a small stream which flows into the Thames, Wandsworth contains a self-contained pocket of period cottages and terraced houses known as The Tonsleys which have remained relatively unchanged as the modern world whizzed by. The nearby Wandsworth roundabout is a terrible eyesore and the river front, a former wharf area, is now dominated by new apartment blocks (and the popular Ship pub, which still stands, defiantly). But just beyond Wandsworth Town station lies the Old York Road which, thanks to the widening of pavements and doing-up of shop fronts, has been totally transformed in recent years. The place has a distinctively villagey atmosphere, and bustles thanks to a number of restaurants, pubs, cafes and independent shops. Right opposite the station, The Alma pub is a great spot with not only an excellent restaurant but also 20 hotel rooms on offer to book at great rates. Nearby, next to Wandsworth Common, is Chez Bruce, the restaurant where Gordon Ramsey learned his trade. The Headquarters of Young & Co, whose Ram Brewery has been producing beer since 1581, is also in Wandsworth, while the BBC TV series Outnumbered was filmed in the vicinity. More
