Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew
Royal Botanic Gardens in KewAt the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew, there are 300 acres of beautiful gardens, with six glasshouses to visit including the Evolution House. The Gardens are open daily from 9.30am. Closing time varies according to the time of year, but it's not earlier than 4pm or later than 7.30pm. For exact times call the Gardens on 020 8940 1171.

Admission to the gardens is £5 for adults, £2.50 for children; during the last hour before closing, there is a reduced rate of £3 for all visitors. Kew Gardens are closed 25 December and 1 January.

The nearest Underground station is Kew Gardens and you are also within easy reach of Richmond with its riverside pubs, antique shops, village green and royal park.

 
Ham House
Ham House is an outstanding Stuart house built in about 1610, containing an original collection of 17th century furniture and a 17th century garden under restoration.

It's open Saturday-Wednesday, 1pm-5pm. The gardens are open daily throughout the year, except Thursday and Friday, from 10.30am to 6pm. Admission is £5 for adults and £2.50 for children. The house is in the village of Ham, off the Petersham Road, a short bus ride from Richmond-upon-Thames or Kingston. The information line is 020 8940 1950

 
Osterley Park House
Osterley Park House, set in 140 acres of landscaped park, is one of the last great estate houses in Greater London. Originally an Elizabethan mansion, it was transformed in the eighteenth century into a neoclassical villa by Robert Adam.

Until 1 November it's open Wednesday-Saturday 2-5pm and Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday 1-5pm. Admission is £4 for adults and £2 for children. The landscaped parks and gardens around the house are open all year round from 9am to sunset each day and are free. The house is in Isleworth, 20 minutes' walk from Osterley Underground station.

 
Syon House
Syon HouseSyon House, the London home of the Duke of Northumberland, is set within 200 acres of Capability Brown landscaped parkland and contains some of Robert Adams' finest interiors. It's open Wednesday-Sunday and Bank Holidays 11am-5pm. On Fridays and Saturdays it closes at 3.30pm. Admission is £5.50 for adults and £4 for children. It's in Syon Park and the nearest underground is Gunnersbury.
 
Carlyle's House
Carlyle's House was the Chelsea home of the famous Victorian historian, philosopher and writer Thomas Carlyle. It features the original Victorian interior with furniture books and portraits and there is also a peaceful walled garden.

It's open Wednesday-Sunday 11am-5pm. Admission is £3.20 for adults and £1.60 for children. The house is situated at 24 Cheyne Row, SW3 near the Chelsea Embankment by Albert Bridge. It's about 15 minutes walk from Sloane Square station.
